Australia's ETA App Streamlines Entry — But Group Leaders Should Plan Ahead

The Australian Electronic Travel Authority is now exclusively processed via the official mobile app for most eligible passport holders. We unpack what tour leaders should brief their groups on before departure.

The Australian ETA (subclass 601) has shifted to a mobile-first model. Eligible passport holders from 35 countries — including the UK, US, Canada, Japan, South Korea and most of the EU — must now apply via the official Australian ETA app on iOS or Android. The legacy web form has been retired for most nationalities.

The process itself is quick: scan the passport chip, take a selfie, pay the AU$20 service charge and most authorisations arrive within minutes. The complication for groups is that every traveller needs to complete it on their own device, and a small percentage will hit chip-read failures or biometric mismatches that require a fallback to a paper visa.

Our recommended workflow for tour leaders: send the app link in your pre-departure pack four weeks out, include a one-page visual walkthrough, and ask travellers to confirm their grant notice (a screenshot is fine) at least 14 days before travel. Build in a buffer for the handful of clients who will need agent-assisted lodgement through a registered migration agent.

Charter and incentive groups travelling on a single manifest can still use ETA but we increasingly recommend the subclass 651 eVisitor route for EU passport holders — it is free, has no app dependency, and avoids the AU$20 per-person charge stacking up on a 60-pax incentive.
