Vanuatu Reopens Tanna Island Volcano Access After Infrastructure Upgrade
Following a twelve-month upgrade to the Mt Yasur access road and viewing platforms, Tanna Island is back on the incentive map. We outline current charter options from Port Vila and what to expect for groups of 20 to 60.
Mt Yasur on Tanna Island — one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world — has reopened to visitors after a twelve-month closure for access road sealing and viewing-platform reconstruction. The Vanuatu Department of Tourism and the local Yenkahe community jointly oversaw the works, funded in part by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
The practical change for groups is dramatic: the previous 90-minute 4WD transfer from Lenakel airport across washed-out ash plains has been replaced by a 45-minute sealed-road journey, and the rim viewing platforms now safely hold up to 60 people simultaneously with steel railings and emergency egress lighting.
Air Vanuatu operates daily ATR-72 services Port Vila–Tanna (Whitegrass) with capacity for around 70 passengers; for incentive groups we are increasingly chartering the full aircraft, which secures bag allowance, schedule control and a single check-in process. Day-trip programmes from Port Vila are viable but tight — we recommend a one-night Tanna overnight at White Grass Ocean Resort or Friendly Beach Bungalows for groups that want to experience the volcano at dusk, which is when the activity is most photogenic.
Visitor numbers remain well below the pre-closure peak, which means current pricing and availability are favourable. We are quoting 2026/27 incentive programmes with confidence and have refreshed our Vanuatu supplier panel accordingly.
