Byron Bay

Experience · New South Wales, Australia

Byron Bay

Australia's easternmost point, an hour's flight from Sydney. The town has changed — it's slicker, more expensive, and more crowded than the old surfing village it was — but the beaches, the hinterland, and the lighthouse walk remain world-class.

What to do

Walk to the Cape Byron lighthouse at dawn (dolphins, occasional whales June–November). Surf at The Pass or Wategos. Day-trip into the hinterland to Bangalow, Newrybar, and Harvest at Newrybar for lunch.

Where to stay

Raes on Wategos is the long-standing icon. The Bower and Bode Byron are the newer boutique picks. Crystalbrook Byron is the family-scale option.
