Great Ocean Road

243km of coast road from Torquay to Allansford, built by returning WWI soldiers. The Twelve Apostles are the photo, but the real reward is the Otways rainforest, the surf at Bells Beach, and a couple of nights at Lorne or Apollo Bay.
The drive
Two days minimum, three if you can. Day 1: Torquay to Apollo Bay via Lorne. Day 2: Otways and the Twelve Apostles. Drive west-to-east for the best ocean-side views and easier pull-offs.
Where to stay
Alkina Lodge near Princetown for the architecture and the cliffs. RACV Torquay or Cumberland Lorne for the more conventional bases.
