Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is 144 subtropical islands strung across a sheltered harbour three hours' drive north of Auckland. It's where modern New Zealand began — the Treaty of Waitangi was signed here in 1840 — and it remains the country's best sailing, game-fishing, and dolphin-watching base. Most trips combine Paihia (the practical hub) with Russell (the prettier overnight) and a day on the water.
On the water
The classic day is the Hole in the Rock cruise out to Cape Brett (4 hours, dolphins likely). For something quieter, sail with R. Tucker Thompson — a tall-ship day cruise with lunch and a swim stop. Overnight skippered yacht charters from Opua are the upgrade for groups.
On land
Waitangi Treaty Grounds is the single most important historical site in the country — allow half a day with the guided tour and cultural performance. Haruru Falls and the mangrove boardwalk are an easy add-on.
Getting there
Drive from Auckland (3 hours via SH1) or fly to Kerikeri (45 minutes from AKL, then 25 minutes to Paihia).
