Waiheke Island

Experience · Auckland & Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Waiheke Island

Waiheke sits 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland and feels like another country — 30+ vineyards, olive groves, white-sand beaches, and a population that has quietly turned the island into one of the best food-and-wine days out in New Zealand. Most visitors do it as a day trip; the better move is to stay a night.

Wineries worth the trip

Mudbrick for the view and a serious lunch. Cable Bay for architecture and contemporary New Zealand cooking. Man O' War on the wild eastern end — worth the drive. Tantalus and Stonyridge round out the syrah-focused trail.

Beaches

Onetangi is the long one (3km of white sand, walkable village at one end). Palm Beach and Oneroa are smaller and family-friendly. Cactus Bay is harder to reach and quieter for it.

Getting there

Fullers360 passenger ferry from the Ferry Building (40 minutes, every 30 minutes). SeaLink car ferry from Half Moon Bay (45 minutes) if you want your own vehicle.
