New Zealand's highest mountain (3,724m) sits at the end of a 55km no-exit road through the Mackenzie Basin. Hooker Valley Track is the must-do walk; the Hermitage is the historic stay; the dark-sky reserve overhead is the upgrade.
What to do
Hooker Valley Track (3 hours return, flat, three swing bridges, glacier-lake at the end). Tasman Glacier boat tour. Heli-flight onto the Tasman or Fox glaciers.
