Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Often called the best one-day walk in the world: 19.4km across active volcanic terrain — Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom in LOTR), the Emerald Lakes, and the Red Crater at 1,886m. 7–8 hours one-way, shuttle required at both ends.
Logistics
Park at Ketetahi (the end), shuttle to Mangatepopo (the start). Most operators run early shuttles from National Park, Whakapapa, and Taupō. Booking required in peak season.
Preparation
Alpine conditions — pack layers, lots of water, sun protection. Snow possible Oct–Dec. Cancel if forecast is bad — visibility matters.
